After I heard what Ms. Mayella had to say about what had happened my confidence gained and I could tell it wasn’t going to be as hard as I though it would to get the jury to listen and agree with what I had to say. At that moment I was proud to call Atticus my lawyer, he looked as if he knew exactly how to get Ms. Mayella to look like she had no idea what she could say or do next to cover up what she’s lying about.
Ms. Mayella couldn’t even answer half the questions Atticus was asking her when she was up at the stand. Every one could tell her story did not match mine at all. I answered everything completely with no hesitation like she had when she answered half the questions. I felt confident and not as worried as when I stepped into the court case. As I made my way out, I saw the way she had looked at Atticus and look that I could not forget, with hatred and anger.
Atticus did a great job and I felt I did a good job keeping my story straight, but really I didn’t have to do anything but tell the truth; I mean I had nothing to hide or things I couldn’t say that happened. The only thing I was worried about is having the jury find me guilty because of my race. I hope for the best and wish that Ms. Mayella would tell the truth and stop accusing me of something I didn’t do. Now all that is left to ask my self is “Why is Ms. Mayella doing this to me?”
I felt as if having Aunt Alexander come live with us would be a great help, but instead it made things a lot different with Scout, Jem and I. Things weren’t going to well when Aunt Alexander arrived; I could tell Jem and Scout weren’t to happy to see her. Aunt Alexander wasn’t afraid to say what she felt like saying, even though most of it shouldn’t have been said at all. Aunt Alexander is the type of person who is straight forward about things and honestly don’t care from what Scout and Jem say about her.
I personally think that in a way she is a help but she could improve the way she acts around Jem and Scout. I can see that the main reason for Scout and Jem’s hatred over Aunt Alexandra was all because she wanted them both to change. Aunt Alexandra wanted Scout to become more feminine and to stop acting like a tomboy, she also wanted both of them to stop acting to rude and start acting a lot more proper. The other night at dinner, no would looked like they had anything to say to each other, they all just sat there silently. When we all finished eating dinner I sat down and started to read, but Scout unexpectedly came up to me and looked like he had something he’s been meaning to say to me.
“Yes I asked” As Scout stands there right in front of me. He opens he mouth as if he still wasn’t sure what he needed to tell me or in that case, ask me. Finally he asks
“What’s rape?” I look at him mean while I try to think of a way to answer question I had not expected to be asked; especially coming from Scout. Before I answered I asked
“Why did you think of asking me this now?” He looked at me with nothing really to say back. Shortly after I had that talk with Scout; Jem asked me if they could talk in his room. When I stepped into the room I saw Dill. Instead of questioning why he was in my house I remained cool and stood there until someone said something about what they need to talk to me about. Right after I finished talking to Jem and Scout, I called Dill’s mom and explained everything to her. I did that to let her know things were fine. Overall I’ve had quite a long week trying to explain to Scout and Jem to deal with Aunt Alexandra and all that she says about what I’m doing; defending a black man and not let it get to them at anytime.

Post #4 Chapters 10 – 12 Perspective – Calpurnia
I thought everything was going fine until Lula came up to me and started asking me questions like “Why you bring white people to a black church?” I didn’t know how to answer back I just thought it was very rude and not right for her to say exceptionally in front of my guest. Scout and Jem both looked at me as if I was doing something I shouldn’t. I thought I knew what it was. I thought maybe they have noticed I’m talking a lot differently then I normally do in front of them. I wasn’t sure what it was but I just let it go and sat down. Mr. Reverend Sykes started talking to all of us about Tom Robinson, we all were sitting down and listening attentively, I could tell that when he brought out the name Tom Robinson Scout and Jem knew he’s was the man there father Atticus was defending for being accused of raping someone.
He mentioned that Tom Robinson was currently in jail and had a wife and kids. This met that he could not provide them all with food and things they need. Mrs. Robinson couldn’t work and had three kids to race. All this ended up with all of us to pay more money, enough to make ten dollars; or else no one leave the church.
I though Mr. Robinson was a little bit to desperate to get that kind of money but then again I could tell he was doing it for a very good cause. After all that we went home. When we got home Scout and Jem asked me what I expected them to ask me.
“Why were talking like that, Calpurnia?” I answered back saying,
“Hmm… well let’s put it this way; when you’re in a certain place you should act a certain way.”
“Because it would be wrong if I spoke to you and Jem like I did at church, wouldn’t it?”
Scout and jem didn’t look like they thought I was right about what I had said but I knew it wouldn’t be lady like of me to talk that way in front of my people. That weekened I felt I got a lot more closer to Scout because now that Jem is all grown up he doesn’t have time to hang out with him anymore; but I just let Scout know I will always be there for him and that he could come see me anytime he wanted to.

Journal #2 - Chapters 4-7 - Perspective: Ms. Maudie Atkins
So like I was saying, Scout and I spent a lot of time together over; sometimes we would talk about random things but most of the time we would discuss what we thought about Mr. Arthur. Scout and Jem were good friends but sometimes I feel like they could use a better father. I mean they don’t even call him dad! They call him by his name; Atticus this Atticus that. Everything was going fine, but summer was almost over and I knew I would miss hanging out with Jem, Scout and Dill. That wasn’t the worst part though, they all insisted to go on a walk so I let them go of course how would I have known something would go wrong? A couple of minutes later; as I was talking to Scout and Jem’s father Atticus, came over and we started talking. After a while I heard this big loud noise. I was worried it had something to do with Scout and Dem, and wondered if they where over near Radley’s place.
I started to get really worried I didn’t know whether or not to go look for them or just let it go. The noise that I had once heard started getting louder, and louder. Now I was really worried. I ended up finding them I looked over at them and the first thing I notice is that Jem didn’t have his pants on; I was about to ask but then again I wasn’t sure I wanted to know. Overall it was a weird but interesting summer; I couldn’t wait until it was over though. Jem and Scout finally went home and I as at peace.
Journal # 3: Chapters 8 - 9 Perspective: Uncle Jack
This was bigger than big! There hasn’t been snow since like the eighteen hundreds. I thought everything was going great I mean having everyone around and also having it snow it was amazing. I thought everything was going great but of course things didn’t stay that way for long; Scout and Francis got into an agreement which then turned into a fight that I had to go stop. I went to go see what happened and all of a sudden Francis starts complaining about what Scout had called him.
I ask him what Scout had said to him, Francis said
“Scout called me a whore-lady”
“What?!” I ask
Scout didn’t say anything and stood silent I didn’t know what to say I was just so mad, I mean first the cursing in front of me now going around calling people some whore-lady? I didn’t know what punishment to give this girl in order for her to understand that cursing is absolutely not okay. Scout and Francis and I all sat down and discussed this situation. I knew that Scout sometimes does have the reason to curse weather it is because he’s mad or offended. I’m not some who would get mad if someone said stupid or shut up and I probably would have said the same thing back if someone called me a “Nigger Lover.” This was quite a day, hopefully everything will settle down.

TKAM Post #1 - Scout
When I was done reading Miss Caroline didn't look to happy; she told me to tell my father to stop teaching me how to read. I was very confused when she told me this because first of all my father didn't teach me how to read I just knew how too; but I knew Miss Caroline didn't believe me. Either way I don't think a teacher should get mad if one of her students knew how to read. It didn't make sense at all, I excepted more of a "Wow, great job Scout." I decided to just get over it and get the rest of the day over with, and hope things would get better. After reading it was time to go to lunch, Miss Caroline took count of all the students that had brought lunch and was about to dismiss them; but she noticed that Walter didn't have lunch. She reached into her purse and took out a quarter. I was looking attentively waiting to see what see was going to do next.
She looks at a Walter and smiles, "You can pay me back tomorrow." She looked as if she knew nothing about Walter Cunningham when she handed him the money. Walter Cunningham's family owned a farm and never took money they couldn't pay back. Of course they don't pay back with money, but with firewood and bushel of potatoes. When I started explaining all of this to Miss Caroline, she just looked at me in more disappointment as if I had given her enough trouble this morning. All I did is try to help her out knowing that shes new to the school; but how do I get repaid? I get whipped. When that day was finally over I was relieved; I got home and Atticus knew something was wrong.
We sat down and talked about how my dad had went. I thought to myself I already went through I don't feel like talking about it. At the end he ended up convincing me stay in school and try my best to stay out of trouble; even though I didn't do anything wrong. I just hope school tomorrow will turn out a whole lot better.

Immigation Reflection
I liked reading this book and how we got to blog about what we thought, as well as read what my group members thought about it, which I thought was also interesting to read. I don’t think I wouldn’t change anything about it. Blogging was fun and helpful because when I normally read something all I really remember is what is ended with, but when I blog about it I look back on everything from the beginning to the end. This helped me get a better understanding on what the book is dealing with at the time. I didn’t have many problems with blogging except for sometimes having internet problems, but I learned to email it to myself and post it at school. Other than that I thought blogging was easy and fast. Having a group reading your work was helpful because they commented on it and either told you they agreed with you or told you why they disagreed with you which helped me both ways.
When it was time to work on the art piece I was going to paint I decided to have six pictures on it to symbolize what the book was about, I didn’t want to paint a picture of one object because I thought it was going to be very hard to put in all the things that go on into one picture. I think that my painting had a strong connection with the book I read because it had to deal with a Quinceanera and religion as well as family and much, much more. My final product I think came out really good, over course it could always use some improvement, but overall I liked how it turned out. Some things that I could of changed would be like, finishing some of the lines and paint the background a lot better. Getting to paint what you feel reflects on your art work, is really cool because well it’s what you think and what your thoughts are about the book. I though it was a creative fun way to express what you thought about the book instead of just writing about it.
Not only did we get to write about a book that had to do with immigration and cultures but we also got to interview someone from another country. My in person interview wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, I though it would be nerve racking and difficult but the person was really nice about everything and, in a way it was hard to get detailed answers about the question I asked but overall I thought it went really good. I enjoyed learning about her life and how she adapted to the United States after living in China for years. We were required to interview our person three times, one by email another by phone, and finally in person. I thought it was interesting doing it this way instead of just one time in person. I liked doing it this way because the person your interviewing you don’t know at all so it would be weird to meet them in person and just as them a whole bunch a questions.
The person I interviewed told me about how things were so much different in China than it was in America, like how when you had to go to the grocery store you would have to stand out side of a food stand and ask for what you wanted in order to buy what you needed, not like in America where you could just walk in a store and buy what you needed your self. I though that was interesting because I’ve never herd of it. In a way the person I got to interview gave me a better understanding on what we were learning in class then again she really didn’t give me that much of a detailed answer. I couldn’t contact my person again but I thanked her by email and made her a scrapbook that contained pictures of her family and her home town, I love scrapbooking and I though it turned out good. It also made me feel better about giving someone something back for the time she put in to tell me about her life story. Overall I really liked this project and enjoyed getting to meet someone new.

Once Upon a Quinceañera Review
I would want people to read this book to learn more about how a traditional Quinceanera, has changed over the years because more and more people are immigrating here and celebrating it here in the United States. I would recommend this book because, the book is not just about a Quinceanera but, immigration and the hardships families deal with when arriving in a new country. When reading this book you'll have so many connections to the character that you'll feel as if the author is writing about you.
I wouldn't recommend this book to everyone, I think that I would recommend this book to girls. Once Upon a Quinceanera, talks a lot about teen age girls, and what they go through. Mixed in with family, tradition, culture, immigration and much more. Not everyone who reads this book is going to like it, but I do know that people who read it are going to learn something new.
Overall I didn't find this book to interesting, but most parts of the book I could relate to, and a lot of parts made me think about different traditions and different people, that are out there. This book sends a message to migrated families and teen age girls. I recommend this book, and hope people learn or understand the message it sends.

Once Upon a Quinceanera
Quote I
"Did I believe in this Q-tradition or not? Yes or no. Si y no. Back and forth. At dinner parties, I'd relate the details of some Q-extravaganza I'd just been to or heard or read about, and as my friends shook their heads and compared quinceaneras to the run ways bar and BatMatzvan, I'd find myself backtracking, wanting to defend nuestra tradicion."
Significance
I picked this quote because it has a lot of background information on the feelings that go through this characters head. She feels as if her group of friends, think a lot differently about her tradition in a way she doesn't agree on. I think that this also shows how she respeects her tradition, and that sometimes when your friends say something you don't agree on you either don't say anything or you agree with them, even though you really don't want to.
Personal Connection
This has happened to me before, and I've noticed that people agree based on what your friends say or think is right, sometimes your idea on what something is may not be something your okay with saying to a group of people who all agree on one thing. I sometime don't want to back up and defend my tradition and culture, but most of the time I feel like I have to.
Question
Did you ever feel like you have to agree with everyone else because your afraid people won't agree with your oppinion?
Quote II
"I was a part of something timeless, hard to name or contain. "Something was growing inside of me," says Estrella as her special night approaches in Estrella's Quinceanera. "A feelings I hadn't had in a long time. I was part of something bigger. I truly belonged."
Significance
Basically this quote is saying that when you are apart of something like a quinceanera, you feel something special, somthing you can't compare to anything else. The first quote I talked about how her feelings got a hold of her and, she felt as if she needed to speak up because her friends were comparing it to many things that she didn't think had nothing to do with a quinceanera.
Personal Connection
When I'm celebrating something in my tradition with my family, I feel as if we all share something special that you can't compare with anyone or anything else. I think I know how this character feels in the book because, I don't think that someone who doesn't celebrate your tradition or knows about your culture can't really agree or dissagree with what it's like because they wouldn't really know much about what it mean to celebrate something they don't and you do.
Question
Do you think Estrella was right, about her friends? How? and why?

Once Upon a Quinceanera #5
Post #5
Quote I
"The Quince Años blessing publicity acknowledges this historic role.” - Page 179
Significance
This quote stood out to me because, Monica acknowledged that most I think. Which shows that she is one of the women in the book who cares a lot about her historical background. The quote also signifies that Monica also can tell that more people grasp the tradition and culture that a quinceanera really comes out to be. Even though more girl that now live in the United States lose touch with.
Personal Connection
I can connect to this because sometimes I don't appreciate or acknowledge what my historical background really means. I just think it's there and never ask what brought our country to be like this? or why we celebrate? I always just go along with it and do what your suppose to do during that celebration. I agree with this quote because I hear from my friends that a quinceanera starts as just a party but mean so much more than what it seems, at the end.
Question
Does Monica think more girls don't know a lot about what you celebrate during a quinceanera?
Quote II
"That we can feel less alone and encouraged in our efforts to put the pieces together into a larger versions of ourselves." - Page 197
Significance
I picked this quote because at first I didn't really get what it ment at first but once reading it over, I liked what it ment. I'm not sure it means this but; I think it means that people from where we come from are still different from yourself as a person but when you learn about all of there people and understand where they come from, we all come together to me one.
Personal Connection
I like this quote because I agree with it. I think that all of us are different even though we come from all over, but at the end we have a lot more in common than what we expected. I've met a lot of people and the first time I meet them I think that we might be good friends but not have a lot of traditional or culture background similarities, but when you get to meet all these people you end up realising that they all are one visions of ourselves.
Question
Do you agree with what the second quote means?

Once Upon a Quinceanera #4
Quote I
"In fact, she dismissed quinceaneras as silly, a waste of money." Page 139-140
Significance
I picked this quote because in the book it means a lot, everyone is now thinking differently about the quinceaneras that are being celebrated. In the beginning of the book celebrating a quinceanera was everything a family that had a Hispanic background, but after moving to the United States; everything changes people start looking at this celebration differently. They start to think in more important thing you can do with your money.
Personal Connection
I can connect to this quote because the family in Mexico, would always ask me what I'm going to do for my quinceanera? and I would always tell them that I want to use the money I got to go somewhere. My family doesn't think it would be such a good idea, but I think once you live here in the United States for a long time, it can change the way you looking at things.
Question
Do you sometimes want to change the way your families celebrations are celebrated?
Quote II
"The later soap opera popularized the Q-tradition, making it a celebration that cool, sexy girls, rich or poor might go for. " Page 151
Significance
I think that the significance of this quote is that it's again explaining how the tradtion of a quinceanera is sharing it's culture tradtion with more and more people in America. Not only girls that are hispanic and have this tradtion, but everyone who want to have one.
Personal Connection
I can connect to this because I am one of those girls, who doesn't really know the background tradition on having a quinceanera, but I always end up just wanting one because more and more girls are wanting to have one. I think that after reading this book I learned a lot more about the background tradition that goes on to have a quinceanera.
Question
Did this book change your mind on what you think a quinceanera is?
Once Upon a Quinceanera #2
Quote I
“Finally in the summer of 1964 our fourth year in the United States, my mother gave up on punishments and threats and hired a Santana to cleanse our house.” Page - 49
Significance
The significance of this quote is I think, is a different but good way of showing the good things that can change when coming to America. It connects with Silvia having a quinceanera and becoming a woman, which also is another reason why her mother chose to make a difference and stop the punishments, and threats.
Personal Connection
I’m not sure how I can connect to this quote, but basically what I think the quote is saying, is that when coming to America things won’t stay the same, and will change but in many good ways in your life.
Question
Do you think that when you come to America things change? How? Why?
Quote II
“This new U.S world was full of strangers who smelled and looked and acted in ways so different from ours. Ways that said our ways was low-class and shameful and loud.” Page – 51
Significance
I picked this quote because it’s saying how different people are in an immigrant’s point of view. The people they see walking around looked different and acted different than what they are use to seeing where they use to live. Like the quote says, these differences might not always make them feel good about where they come from but low-class and shameful. Overall just different from everyone else.
Personal Connection
I can connect with this quote because sometimes I do feel like where my parents come from is a lot different from things in the U.S, and if I was someone who just came to America I might look at things in a bad way and think that where I come from is low-class or shameful compared to the United States, because things are a lot different.
Question
Do you sometime feel like Olga and how she feels about things in America?
Saturday, February 28, 2009
Once Upon a Quinceanera #3
Quote I
"She was too consumed with feminism to see past the historical significance of quinceaneras" - Page 45
Significance
This quote spoke to me because this also can relate to the quotes I used in my first blog post about immigrants families losing there culture and becoming more American than what they really are. This quote is saying that sense they lost touch with the reason they really have a quinceanera, and focus and other things that don't really have to do with there tradition.
Personal Connection
I can compare myself to this quote because when I talk to my mom or someone about my family about my future plan for a quinceanera, I know everything that I want it to be but have no clue, what's so ever one why I'm having one. So really the quote is saying that now the population of girls having a quinceanera have forgotten the traditional reason why there having one.
Question
Do you ever feel like your celebrating something that you don't know much about? or why you are?
Quote II
"It's a Hispanic tradition, but these other groups are going to these parties and wanting one as well.” Page – 99
Significance
This quote is saying that now that a lot more families live here in the United States, more and more cultures and traditions connect together. If someone at school is having a quinceanera and your invited but you don't celebrate that in your family, you still go and sometimes end up wanting to make one of your own.
Personal Connection
I can relate to this because, this past year I have been going to many more bar mitzvah and some sweet sixteens; and after going to all of those celebrations it makes me want to have one of my own one day. Even though my family might not believe or celebrates these celebrations. What the quote says to me is that, now that a lot more families from other countries come to America and share there traditions and culture with people here.
Question
Do you think that once people connect with other traditions, and cultures they might want to be apart of it? Why? or why not?
Once Upon a Quinceanera #1
Quote I
“Your family is probably not rich; in fact, your mami and papi have been saving up since you were a little girl or they’ve mortgaged the house or lined up forty godparents to help sponsor this celebration, as big as a wedding.” - Invitation
Significance
This quote is saying one of the hardships or the challenges immigrant families went through, especially to make a Quinceanera. I feel like after reading this quote, it gave me a better understanding on how hard it was to pay off a quinceanera. A couple lines above this quote I predicted that this family was going to end up not having a quinceanera, because they didn’t have enough money to pay it off, but instead the quote explained that the daughters parents were doing all they can have money to make this qiunceanera.
Personal Connection
I can relate to this quote because, when I went to Mexico I over herd my mom and grandma talking to a family that needed help paying off a quinceanera. When the family left I asked them what they needed, and why they couldn’t help them? My grandma said that she gets many calls asking for money to help pay off a celebration; and said no because, if she helped all those people she would be broke. I felt as the family in the book was giving up a lot just to have one celebration.
Question
What do you think about the facts COSSMHO is bringing up in the story?
Quote II
"Of course, this began to cause trouble in our family. My sisters and I wanted to hang out with our friends, sleep over at thier houses, attend their parties, wear clothes like thiers-skirts that were too short, tops that were too skimpy, ragedy jeans." Page 23
Significance
This quote really spoke to me because, it's saying that when girls immigrate to the United States or have parents who immigrated here; there a lot more different. They act different and want to do things that people in America are use to doing in a regular basis.
Personal Connection
I can relate to this quote because I would bring up somethings i do with my friends to my grandma when I visit Mexico; and her reaction to the things I'm telling her make no sense to her. She tells me "Beyra, here in Mexico people don't do that, in fact they wouldn't think about things like that, well at least when I was your age, the only concern that went through our heads was to make something of our lives and never wast time." I didn't think the things I told her was a waste of time, but apparently to her it was. Which shows me even though I don't see it, people do actually change when coming to America, and its hard to stay in touch with there own culture.
Question
Do you think it's hard to keep in touch with your culture when your surrounded by people who live an American life style?
Tuesday, February 24, 2009
Part I
The purpose of this exhibit was to learn more in debt about immigration. I found interesting, one thing I found interesting was that Ruth Handler was the inventor of the “Barbie Doll” Another thing I found interesting was that George Washington made a letter which stated that “No government can be racist” As you can see I found many things interesting on this field trip. I also learned that immigrant that came to the United States often, most likely had to sleep with two families in a two bedroom apartment, in New York. I’ve always wondered where and when we got the Statue of Liberty, and I found out it was a gift from France on July 4th, 1884. Overall I enjoyed going to the exhibit I learned a lot.
Part II
The Picture that I liked at the exhibit was the called “Mother and daughter from India, International Airport New Immigrant Arrivals 2000. The reason I liked this picture was because I thought that it said a lot about what a immigrant feels when coming to America. In the picture there is an Indian woman holding the hand of a young girl. They both looked tired and in a way relieved. I also noticed that they didn’t have that many things, which also shows me that when coming from another country you can’t bring much on such a long journey.
Quote
“The greatest thing I hope for in my life is to become a successful person and to have a family and friends to support me, not to be looked at by just the color of my skin but who I am inside.”
I picked this quote because I liked what its saying. I think this a great way to express what an immigrate wants when coming to the United States. I liked this quote also because you can also relate this to just regular citizens that might feel there getting rejected because of there skin color and not just immigrants. I can also relate to this quote because I’ve met people who treat me differently or look at me different because of my race.

IMMIGRATION
Somene who migrates to another country. Some reasons why an immigrant would want to leave their country, are maybe because they might not like the rights they had or they might of had a lot of disagreeing with the choices there government made. Another reason they might have left there country is because they got payed very little for the long hours they worked, in comparison to the country they want to go to. My mom left Mexico because she didn't like the way our government was running there country.
Some things that out country has to offer in comparison to other countries is probably the fact that our country is a lot more stable and secure. Also because the government makes lawsthat really help our country stay in order, and they care and try to do the best they can to make this country better for everyone. As well as the way were payed and treated. Immigration has affected the US because now that they all live here theres more types of culture. It helps the US because it helps keep the economy moving by filling low-wage jobs, and theres a lack of true ethnic diversity. Theres also a lot more languages, and sometimes that could be a good or bad thing depending on the way you look at it. Immigrants also affect our laws because, like I said a lack of true ethnic diversity which means they could be lying about almost anything which causes problems for the US.
My connection to immigrants is close because my mom was an immigrant, a couple year after she got here in the United States, she became a citizen and my dad already being a citzen helped my mom a lot. Other than my mom and grandparents, I'm not really I know any other immigrants. I feel after hearing someone slose to me talk about what they went threw to get here, gives me a way better understanding on why someone from other country would want to come to the United States.
